BUKOWSKI

29 Oct 2011

I got into Charles Bukowski when I was in my late teens & I think it was ‘Factotum’ that I read first… being easily impressed by drunks & people who hated people, I was hooked.

I read everything I could & loved the poetry (and tried to write some too, naturally) but I eventually grew out of love with him (especially in the avalanche of books after he died).

It was the film ’Born Into This’ that got me back into him. I hadn’t really heard him read his own poetry before & it makes it for me, hearing him say it…

He has also led me to many other writers over the years — Hemingway, Carson McCullers, James Thurber, John Fante, Louis-Ferdinande Celine, and for that I am also grateful.

When he’s good, he’s great…

EDIT:

I meant to add this at the time, but forgot… DOOM makes use of Buk in this beaut from his last album. I’m a big fan.
